Fished with a buddy today on Champlain. Started at 0630 and the first fish cast yielded a short crappie and that was the theme of the day. We boated over 75 crapps and not one was over 8.5 inches. Garland baby shads and swimming minnows were the ticket about a foot under the float, colors varied from white to orange and a red and yellow. they all worked well. Throw in 20 or so bass apiece ranging up to a couple lbs . Actually caught more crappie than seeds and gills. thats a first.

Took the family out fishing on sunday and had a similar experience on champlain, we caught about 2 dozen short crappie, along with a nice mess of bluegills and sunnies. I'm not sure why there was so many small crappies, maybe there is a bumper crop on the way!

Can anybody recommend an area near isle la motte? I'd love to catch some crappies, but I can't go that far... As I do not have a car, or drivers license. I do however have a small boat with a 9.9 on it.
Thanks guys, Go catch em!

Seems like the crappies chose to spawn in the bays more this spring than usual. I'm sure it has something to do with the lack of rain we got creating a slow role in the rivers and creeks. I fished a bay in the islands a few days ago and caught some craps, one actually still had eggs so the concentration of small fish that you guys have been seeing means it's still going to get good(small males making the beds). Keep the reports coming and I hope to get up there soon.

Yeah i need to get a camera. I wouldn't dare take the wifes near the water, if something were to happen to it ...... I might as well move out.We were fishing a creek and the condition were actually pretty tough between the milfoil already at the surface and cotton like crap all over the surface we spent a lot of time trying to clear the lines. The fish were hanging around the lily pads and once you were off em the bite slowed right up.

Really? lily pads? I guess that's the structure we'll get up north. We should all work together and find some structure in about 16 fow off these spawning bays and creeks. There's gotta be some, and if we can find them we're going to have a great summer catching crappies!

yeah I was just thinking that on champlain where there is deeper water available to them they would drop there, they didn't have that in the setback.

They were right up under the pads. There was a lot of what I call cripple brush that looked very fishy but If there were any fish there they weren't interested in our offers. I tried dropping down into the holes . tubes, curly grubs and marabou, nothin. Lots of big bowfin rolling around in there . That may have had something to do with it.
