So I roosted a hen, jake and a tom last night. They went in early and roosted in a spot where I have killed many birds from so I decided I would hunt for only the third time this year. The hen roosted 5 mins earlier than the two boys so i figured she would be a little further back in the woods which would give me a good chance to wack one early, I only hunt till 6 on work days. Got set up around 4:30, one hen decoy out trying to match what the saw the night before when they roosted, another good choice! Crawled in the bushes and sat quite. Crows cawwed and birds gobbled. The jake was probably only 50 yards roosted from where i was and the tom was another 50 down the field line. I made some soft yelps and when it got light enough I did a fly down cackle. The birds pitch down in the woods and came out the road to our sugar house about 75 yards away. A few more yelps and they were on a string, jake first. So when they came in I was pissed, the jake was so much bigger than the longbeard weight wise. I bet he had 2-3 pounds on him. They came in close which in my mind sucks because I could have spit on them and they could see the whites of my eyes. I let them walk by me once and they turned away from me so I pulled to the right and made a 10 yards shot. this is the smallest longbeard I have ever seen weight wise. Haven't reported him yet but i'll be surprised it he goes 16lbs. He has some hooks though, I mean daggers! which makes me think he's at least a three year old if not older and he might have been getting ready for the nursing home for turkeys. Shot him at 5:40 and was home before I usually wake up for work. Tagged out, now I can walleye fish!
