I've found that with some horizontal jigs, I can get a definite bite but the fish drops off quickly. I wonder if they were grabbing from the end opposite the hook, (never get the hook in their mouth ) . I double check that the hook is sharp, not bent/mangled, etc ....still miss fish. Has anyone watched sunnies on a camera and seen them grab a jig from the wrong end ?

That is kind of odd. I know I have some jigs that I seem to get better hook sets from.I thought it was the quality of the hook.like the GENZ bugs seems I get real good hook sets. Others depending on how they are biting. The new fish fry jigs that I got from you Kevin Brantner those are amazing good fish with those

Last week I sight fished 2 days. I did notice that some fish were grabbing body rather than the bait (plastic/maggot). In general, this was not the case though. When I use small horizontal jigs, 12 and up, I like to open up the gap a bit. I get better hook ups this way. When switching between vertical and horizontal jigs, I find that I have a period of relearning how and when to set the hook- not that it is much different. But anyone who has seen me fish knows that I strike out a lot!

Thanks for the tip on opening the hook gap, I'll try that.

This is actually a quite common occurrence. In some instances they do grab the correct end and you will get the same result as they grab a jig with the hook point still outside their mouths. If you find yourself in this situation drop your rod tip or give the fish some slack to take the weight or resistance off it. In that split second many times more than not they will open their mouths and take the bait (jig) in. This is actually a common feeding habit of panfish. When not sure on eating an item they first grab it then inhale second. I hope this helps so pause and hook more fish. Good luck. When all else fails Bow To Your Gills!!!!

If you only use one or two spikes your jig will spin gills hate that so use 3 or more this will help your jig stop spinning.

Now that's interesting, It'll be hard not to react to the initial bite but I'll have to give it a try when I get in to some of those 'hit-and-a-miss' type bites.. Thanks, gofish
