you cut a hole you put your transducer in the water you see 4 fish stacked up what 1 do you fish for your bait starts at the top so start at the top why chance spooking a fish on the way to the bottom, an aggressive fish will come a long way off the bottom for a bait but it is less likely to have a fish drop down to hit a bait. if the fish do not want to hit then try a new jig it takes less time to tie on a new jig than it does to tell your friends they just did not want to bite when you just refused to give them what they wanted

Agree, fish aren't built to look DOWN . Their eyes are on the top and point UP, so you want the bait above them. I had perch come up 10 ' last year to snag a slow-falling jig. It was fun to watch them cruise up off the bottom.
