always use a sharp jig dull jigs cost you fish if you are smashing bait to get it on the hook toss it put a sharp one on when you hook your spike on there is a right end to put the hook through it is the end that looks like it has 2 little eyes and hook it lightly so it stays alive longer. don't clear all the ice chips out of the hole this can work as camo to break up shadows from above fish hate shadows watch them in the spring when a seagull cast a shadow on them the water exsplodes

I never knew that about spikes having a 'right' and 'wrong' end . I just jab the hook thru ...guess i"ll change that this year.

If you stab a spike and a puss like liquid comes out you went to deep it should be clear
