Anyone else read this? www.burlingtonfreepress.com/article/20111211/LIVING10/112110330/-1/living10/Outdoors-Deer-season-numbers-downOutdoors: Deer season numbers down The 2011 deer seasons in Vermont end today with the close of muzzleloader season, and all indications are Vermonters will be enjoying a lot less venison than usual this winter. The number of harvest reports received by the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department for the bow, youth and rifle deer seasons are all down sharply from the most recent three-year average at the same point. As of Wednesday, 2,162 harvest reports had been received for the Oct. 1-23 bow season, down 28 percent from the most recent three-year average of 3,022. The Nov. 5-6 youth season harvest stood at 947, down 41 percent from the most recent three-year average of 1,603. The Nov. 12-27 bucks-only rifle season harvest stood at 4,070, down 28 percent from the most recent three-year average of 5,658. No harvest totals are available for muzzleloader season yet. However, it is sure to finish down because the number of antlerless permits issued for the nine-day December hunt was reduced by more than 60 percent this year in response to the long, snowy winter of 2011. Final harvest numbers will change as reports continue to trickle in. But at this point it is unlikely that they will move dramatically one way or the other.
