Sunday we scouted and saw 13 deer, weather was overcast and in the 50's only 1 confirmed buck . Monday up at 4:30 in the woods in the dark with a lite rain, not my favorite but what can you do, as it turns daylight the fog starts to settle in, the fog was so thick IF you could see the head to identify a buck it was going to take 2 shots to kill it, first 1 just to cut through it , second to hit it. local boys must have seen the weather report nobody was in the woods at noon.I decided to make something happen and tried to move deer to Nikki, i counted 11 deer no bucks. called it a day at dark, no deer, no shots.
Tuesday back in the woods in the dark ,lite rain ,thin fog as it turns daylight the fog rolls in not as bad as Monday but still cutting visibility to about 30% .around 9:30 i realize we are alone the deer still are not moving this time i am taking Nikki with me if we see some deer she can fill her doe tag. as we make our way down to the bottom the rain picks up this sucks but what can you do we both are wearing cabala's drylock plus, and should stay dry, by 10:30 the sky falls in it is now a downpour and nothing you are wearing is going to keep you dry. around noon i have had my fill we are soaked head to toe ,as we are riding out on the 4-wheeler i tell Nikki keep your chin up this is part of hunting you take what you are dealt and deal with it . Hey look 2 doe run out past us on the gas line she jumps off the bike, i blat at them they lock up the brakes they are in to much cover no shot. We ride another 1/4 mile out a doe is standing up on the side hill by herself, back off the bike, load the gun she shoots ,the doe stand looking at us turns and walks off , Well baby that is all part of hunting we all miss at some point , she is discouraged and we pack it in for the day.we spend the rest of the day drying out so we can hunt the last morning.
Wednesday we are back at it at daylight, new day 25 mph winds and RAIN wonderful we are up on the opposite ridge and still not seeing any deer ,around 9:00 i tell Nikki lets try a new plan we will push towards the field and maybe something will stick around long enough for a shot. we reach a point that we can see down in the bottom and i ask Nikki keep doing what we are doing or drop down in the bottom to see if the deer are there trying to get out of the wind .LOOK a deer down in the bottom do you want to try and shoot it? i put cross hairs on it it is a 4 point buck she says no you shoot it . the day before i took a hard fall but i don't think it hurt the gun BANG ,nothing it just stands there, chamber another BANG it starts to trot off well i guess i was wrong something is wrong must have knocked the scope off, hurry chamber another round BANG this time he reacts runs 25yards and piles up we get down to him clean him up tag him and start to drag him and realize this is going to be a chore like no other the ground is so soft and it is red clay you have no traction on the hills and we have a long way to the top and out 3 1/2 hrs later we are at the top, take him to register him .We make it back and skin & debone by 2:30 lets find a doe or buck for Nikki .As the end grows near i find a doe on the same hill Nikki missed before. I am trying to help her find it and shoot it she is having a lot of trouble. She tells me everything is black, i look through the scope and it is fine ,she tries again we have found a very patient deer i find the problem her arms are to short she is way to the back of the butt of the rifle and can see next to nothing out of the scope .Bang she misses i feel terrible she is a great shot on the bench when she does not have to hold the gun and i did not see the problem until it was to late SORRY NIKKI we will have a new rifle for you next year.
