So my two younger brothers (Ten years old) just got their orange cards the other day and we are planning to take them out this weekend but we are not sure on what gun to let them use. We have a few options and I would like to get an idea of what everyone else thinks.
Options:
30-30 (Open sights) 223 20 Gauge with Buck Shot 308 carbine 270
Neither of them have done much shooting with a good rifle but they are by no means beginners. I am leaning toward the 20 gauge myself but I'm just not sure. I think the 308 and 270 are a little big for them but they are options.
Thanks for the help.

223 for sure. 30-30 is a great option if they are confident with their shooting abilities and you have a spot where shot opportunities are close enough. I remember my first shot at an animal with a rifle... It was probably the most nervous I've ever been! Don't let them get overly concerned with rifle and it's recoil. Adrenalin will take over all anxiety from the shot! If not I'd prefer the 270 if I were still a youth!

I like the 270 if they can shoot it. never been a fan of small calibers for deer hunting to many horror stories of lost deer.

Thanks for the input. I'm going to have them shot all the options and see what they like the most, and hopefully I will have a few pictures after this weekend.

270, shot my first deer and my last deer with mine, I was 12 when I got my first one, rested the barrel on my fathers foot and made a 180 yard shot, dropped a 4 point in his scrape. Just tell them it's going to kick a little, they'll be ok, i've met both of them.

of all your options the one i would stay away from is the 30-30 lever it has shot the most deer but also the most hunters when a young hunter is trying to let the hammer down after loading i personally like the 243 for a young hunter i love my 270 the most for myself then 308,25-06,7mm-08 good luck

Just got back from trying the different guns. Eli is going with the 243 and kegan with the 270. Hopefully we can see a few deer this weekend.
