Our hunter was Jacob Burns 11 yrs old type 1 diabetes bad enough he is home schooled. We headed to the kingdom Friday morning with great expectations talked to a couple of loggers and got BAD news they had a horrible winter kill and wished us a lot of luck said they were not seeing any moose GREAT. Feeling this is going to suck lets ride the power line and see how much sign there was, 2 tracks the whole length . This is not good but we will give it all we can
Saturday i met up with a good friend and logger Tom Frizzell . He tells me the same thing what the snow did not kill the ticks did, yearlings took it the worst but off we go, lets make the best of it 2-3 fresh tracks not much for old sign either. We hunted hard despite a fairly steady rain at the end of the day we had seen eight deer and 0 moose maybe tomorrow.
Sunday up at 5 and guess what it is still raining but off we go. We meet up with Tom and set a plan keep trying and try to stay dry again. We still cannot find any serious moose sign maybe 1 or 2 fresh tracks,At 2:30 we move to a different spot hey look 3 more deer. I tell Jacob who is getting increasingly more frustrated look on the bright side we are seeing no deer sign but we are seeing deer and we are seeing moose sign keep your chin up we have plenty of time. We say goodbye to Tom who Can only give the weekend. He hands me back the guide pass shakes my hand and wishes me good luck.So far we have put on about 15-20 honest miles and are all starting to feel a little dejected but i hunt whitetail in Vermont so i smile and tell Jacob maybe tomorrow, if we stay where they live sooner or later we will find something, but little buddy i have a treat for you you can sleep in he smiles and says cool how late truth is i was whipped and i know his dad and Nikki felt the same as i did 5:30. What do think about that we all chuckle and go get dinner
Monday we walk out the door and guess what, right it is raining but off we go. We try some new ground find 2 fresh tracks feeling a little better but not much put on 2-4 more miles . Who wants to eat ,back to the lodge and eat some homemade vegetable soup Nikki had made.I ask the question are you ready to try it again. Jacob and as i expected, we don't have to we can stay in and watch some TV ,wrong i prod him a little and we head out. I chose to try something different we are going higher we get up to around 2400 ft perfect 2 miles later and dragging our feet as we are headed back out. That was not where they are either. he starts to dose off in the truck we are still maybe 6 miles back in.Jacob we only have 1/2 maybe 3/4 of an hour of legal shooting time don't give up yet. Suddenly off to the left MOOSE Jacob and his dad are in shock get out this is it, she is standing in an old winter road. Move away from the truck load the gun they are fumbling in a panic and total awe.Jacob put the cross hairs on her she is going to leave. Shoot Jacob as she starts to turn broadside at 60 yrds .At the report of the rifle she drops right in her tracks. I keep them back, go ever to her to make sure it is done i call him over to finish the job so she does not suffer.with tears of joy in my eyes i pick him up Jacob you have done it. We have walked 15-20 miles in the kingdom in search of a moose and you have done it congratulations little buddy. ;D ;D ;D click and view as a slide show i think you will enjoy it s950.photobucket.com/albums/ad341/dody/HUNTOFALIFETIME%202011%20JACOB%20BURNS/
