So I finally got a new truck, but this one doesn’t have room in the cab for passengers and my fishing poles at the same time. I was wondering if any one had a good SAFE way to drive around with them in the bed of a truck. They are St. Croix rods with Quantum reels that don’t come apart and are practically kids to me, so having something happen to them is not an option. I would make my passengers ride in the back, but I have a feeling the local law enforcement wouldn’t like that all that much. Any ideas would be appreciated.

No. Its a GMC 1500 with an 8 foot bed and a tool box in the front.

if the rods are shorter than the bed take the reels off and make a rod case out of 4" pvc i have even flown with them and the are cheap to build fixed cap 1 end screw in clean out for the other you can drive over it and the rods are still safe

I also have a new truck for the summer and am stuck in the same dilemma. I'm designing/building a box now to hold both my tackle boxes and rods. Fortunately, all my poles are 2 piece with the exception of one. I don't have a bed liner other than a sheet of plywood so I can screw it down anywhere I want. I plan on a wooden box that is large enough for my tackle with mounts on the side to hold my poles. Just small bungies should be enough I think. I will have to test it with some camp ploes! St Croix are not meant to be broken!
In my forester, I tapped out the ceiling plugs so they would fit a 3/8 bolt. Then I made wooden supports for a solid base to attach velcro to. I have used velcro to hold my poles for the last 5 years. I have had no issues with it and it keeps them hidden so they don't get stolen!

Thanks for all of the advice. Im thinking Im going to try the pvc with a swimming noodle insert as a little bit of extra protection. Might have to carve it out a little more but it SHOULD work. I would go with something like that rod holder but at least one of my rods is 7' 6" so it would be a little snug in there. But the idea is a good one and it might not be a bad model to base a homemade case off of.
Thanks again.

I just finished my box. Took the truck down a few rough roads to test it out. Everything worked well! Plenty of clearance even on rough roads where the box could bounce a bit. Pulls out onto tailgate to access the compartment It can ride parallel to the tailgate for easier access. Bracers behind it lock it into place from sliding to the front of the bed. Slides into the truck if I have to load up other stuff at the same time. Bracers keep it from sliding side to side
