I never knew how to fish Scott!
Details on my hunt:
The spot I hunted I had found scouting 2 years prior. It's about 1.25 miles as the crow flies from any roadway. I hung 2 stands on either side of it in 2009. I saw lots of bucks in 2009, but didn't think I was doing the right thing by not putting myself in the heart of all the action. After I killed a buck in 09' I scouted this area heavily and picked a cluster of trees to hang a stand. This year after we arrived, the first day I toted my hang on stand with padded shooting rail to the cluster of spruce trees and hung the stand as quietly as possible, then got the heck out of dodge. This was on October 30th. The next day was Halloween and I was excited to put it mildly to get back there. I climbed in the stand before light. I could see 175 yds across the opening and 350yds to my left and right. Scrapes and rubs where on what seemed like every other tree. Hands down the best spot I've ever hunted. As daylight broke I caught a good deer @ 250 working the edge....binocs on him and I see it's a good ten pointer! Not this again...last year (09'') first buck I saw was a decent 14pt buck, but not old at all and I let him walk. I watched this buck work the entire edge of about 700 yds before disappearing out of sight. It was a 130" type buck, but I really thought there were better. 10:30 am rolls around with no more movement. Then I hear steps 30 yds from me back in the timber. I look down over the shooting rail and it's a wolf standing not 5 yds from my tree. Watched him for a minute or so. 2:00 pm rolled around and a 1-1/2 year old 8-pt showed up about 300 yds away. Came out in the opening and fell asleep for an hour or so. He was awaken by another buck, a decent what I thought was a 3-1/2 year old 9-pt that came out to feed in the opening until dark. I slipped out without either knowing I was there. The next morning @ 8:00 am I heard some branches crack straight out in front @ 175 yds. A doe popped out...first I'd seen. She was nervously looking back..then I heard him crack a branch. It was soooo quiet. I spotted the buck working a licking branch over a scrape. When I had him in the binocs he snort wheezed. It was awesome! Another deer followed which was the fawn. This buck had 10-pts with a short G-4 on the right side, but was only a 2-1/2 year old. He ran and chased that fawn, grunting loud to keep the fawn from reuniting with the mother. Pretty neat to watch for about an hour. The rest of the day was quiet until about 45 mins before dark. I picked up the rattling horns and hit em hard. Nothing immediately came in, but 15 mins or so elapsed and I heard the cadaence of foot steps. As quiet as it was and as close as it was I told myself it was a small deer.........then he appeared about 40 or 50 yds to my left. As it was stepping out I was picking up my binocs...said nooo binocs needed...grabbed the Winchester Model 70 7mm Mag and buckled him. It all happened in a few seconds.
The buck has about a 20" spread as a 5x6. Tine length is around 10" on the 2's and 3's. We rough scored it in the mid 150's. It was noticeably larger bodied than the only one that we weighed which was 223 lbs after hanging for 3 days. Left the stand in the tree, and pulled the seat. Looking forward to going back next year.
My brothers buck he got the shot on film. Main frame 8-pt with stickers. His was heavier than mine. Once I get that I'll post it if it's possible.
Scott can you tell me if it's possible?
