Here's how I protect my ice rods from myself, these stand up to lots of abuse. It's 1 1/2 inch pvc, this one is conduit, drain pipe works just as well. Cut to length, make a notch for the reel, and glue on a piece of velcro to hold the rod in place. Cheap and very effective. gofish

Good Idea! Thanks for sharing! How do you like the slv? I would like a smaller reel for an ice rod but I swap them over in the summer on to my fly rods and it doesn't interest me for that purpose!.

They're great. I started with some cheap fly reels, they were ok for holding the line but the drag was hopeless. I like the SLV for the smooth drag, and the large spool. I back them with tipup line then add 50 yds of 2 or 4 lb mono. gofish

That's the 4-5? I would only get the slv to have a 2-3. I could always pick up a light fly rod for mountain streams. If I do that I'll pick one up!

One other thing Dylan, if you are going to be fishing deeper water, go with the 4/5...really not that much bigger, just some input for you....I have both the 2/3 and a 4/5....
