I've been doing a lot of reading and some of the best crappie fishing happens right after ice out, literally days. I'm going to do this at db this year. Anybody want to give it a try with me you're more than welcome.

I was looking at the map and has anyone ever tried devil's pond or the other little setback just north of db in the spring? I bet they hold up in there too.

Never heard of it or noticed it until now. I don't know much about open water Crappie but that looks like a likely place to me! I've also heard about charcoal creek fishing right at the culvert. I drove by Arrowhead this wkend and I'm pretty sure there is a culvert that dumps in along side the road...maybe I'll go for a drive and scope out some places Saturday. I'd like to check out the rock river too,up north?
What's a good technique for ice out Crappie?

I know they get crappie at the colvert at arrowhead, small hair jig tipped with a fathead and a stick bobber is what I use

Cool,thanks...I'm going to get some gear Friday after I get paid. Do you jig it at all it just kinda let it float in place? Anybody think the Crappie are in the creeks by culverts yet?

I have fished ice out crappies a lot up north. I also have never caught one in DB. Bobby I fished those little pond/setbacks north of DB and never had a bite. I want to fish them again though...there is a ton of structure and rootwads in those little places, too perfect looking to not hold fish at some point, I feel my timing just wasn't right. Fished in mud creek and got a few, lots of perch always. immediately in the mouth on the right there are little skinny lanes that slide back, I did well there. I don't know where Arrowhead is but was talking to a guy last year in charcoal who mentioned it can be good.
I buzz around in my boat a lot when the ditch fishing is tough. One day last year I found a pocket of clean/clear water among the muddy crap near the mouth of Charcoal and it was stacked with fish. Some days there seems to be no ryhme or reason to them being wherever they are, other days, especially early on, I have found fish in very shallow water in marshy areas on the northern shorelines. It feels a lot like duck hunting in some of the places I have caught them in spring.
