On Saturday Feb. 13 2010 -<')))))>< Ice Team Members George and Cheryl Devolos, Elmer Ross, Bill Snover, Shawn Hayes, and Myself Attended the 37th almost annual crappie derby at WHITNEY POINT NY -- Teaching the fishing with electronics part of a 4 stage system designed for edjucating the the kids about modern ice fishing. First they learn fish identifacation and about a lakes eco-system, who eats what when, where, how and why, next they learn how to tie knots at a knot tying station. After each youth was given a jig rod and teamed up with one of Us to learned how to fish with a vexilar. The temperature was a balmy 21 degrees. The wind chill was a sultry nine. but with a turn out of more than 4500 people and the Organizers tailoring the derby for children, making sure that there are plenty of prizes to go around, it was a real success.............. Here are some pics,

It's nice to see that people are willing to set time aside to teach kids how to fish, and make it fun on the way. The kids I grew up with all learned from their parents. If your dad fished perch, you learned how to fish perch. If your dad didn't fish you probably didn't either.
Hats off to the organizers and all you ice-fishing teachers !
