I just wanted to pass on that this Saturday 2/16 we are having The Great Ice free kids fishing derby for all kids 14 years old and younger. It will be held from 10am to 1pm on City Bay which is just off the Hero's Welcome boat ramp in North Hero, Vt. This is an annual event and there will be 23 trophies awarded to the longest fish spread out over 2 age groups. In years past it has been a lot of fun and the kids get to enjoy free hotdogs, soda, hot chocolate and other goodies out on the ice. Young anglers are encouraged to bring their own tackle but there are a few jigging sticks available for loan. In addition there are usually a few local anglers who set up tip ups for any kid that wants to answer a flag. It looks like it is going to be a nice day and I look forward to seeing all the kids and the parents. If anyone wants to show up and volunteer to help new anglers learn about fishing or to help with registration, cooking, weigh in or even cutting holes it would be welcomed. The ice in City Bay is also good for skating with a small rink cleared as well as a 1 km oval.

It went well. The day was warm and not much wind. We had at least 50 kids along with their parents. Most everyone caught fish which were for the most part perch. Largest was a 12" fatty and the smallest was about 5". We did have 2 northern pike submitted in the extraordinary category as well. Last year the fishing was better and we had 8 pike one of which was a 10 1/2 pounder. We gave out 23 trophies plus another for a "good effort". All the kids got hotdogs, hot and cold drinks and candy so that was a hit as usual. All the fishing was in a half mile radius of the Hero's Welcome ramp on City Bay and we had some tipup volunteers letting the kids without tackle pull in fish. We even gave rides on a wheeler pulled wagon to get the kids and parents out on the reef. I think I have done that derby for the past 6 years and although it is fun it is a lot of work getting ready and then the cleanup. I imagine by next year I'll be ready to do it again but missing some of those fishing days when I am getting it ready is tough.

Sounds like a good time! It might take up some of your fishing time but it is rewarding to help teach what we all love.
