I was saddened to see in today's Burlington Free Press that local outdoorsman Jim Christman passed away on Sunday. Jim was a very gifted sportsman and followed his passion his whole life. I had the pleasure of working with Jim for many years and learned a lot from him about that new fishing system called down rigging back in the trout and salmon restoration on Champlain during the late 70's. I served with Jim as a board member of both the Lake Champlain Charter Captain's Association and the Central Vt Trout Unlimited. In addition to being an excellent hunter and fisherman he was a master rod builder. His custom bamboo rods were beautiful and became quite a collector’s item. He could catch fish out of a mud puddle and his boat Grey Ghost was one of the top salmon and lake trout producers on Champlain during the early years. Jim Christman…rest in peace.
